Many scholars think the resurrection was an actual event. Christians believe this by definition (Romans 10:9) *
The Minimal Facts Approach takes the list of facts that virtually all scholars agree on. It’s like the largest common denominator. Here are the first two and why they matter.
- Jesus died by crucifixion -Roman Rulers, Jewish historians, and eyewitness accounts all verify Jesus’ life and death by crucifixion.
- Jesus’ disciples believed that he rose and appeared to them. -Many disciples believed their Rabbis and masters did incredible things or became God after they died! However, such disciples did not hold onto their beliefs under persecution. In contrast, the disciples of Jesus never stopped confessing to Jesus’ death and resurrection. Roman, Greek, and Jewish documents attest to their faith in Christ unto death. This was not the norm.
How are you at reading a textbook? Can you tell me what the other two are? Your notes do not require them, but I want you to absorb the material.
*If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
