1.2 Thinking it Through
- What acts of Jesus in Acts 1 serve as a summary of the chapter?
- How would you relate the kingdom of God to the giving of the Spirit and to the Great Commission?
- What is the significance of Jesus’ ascension?
- What is the significance of the disciples’ choosing Matthias to replace Judas?
- What is your role in the Great Commission?
Always remember the almighty first rule of working together: Talk About It!
Avoid copying answers. Instead, read the question you did and talk about the answer.
- Minimum 1-page collaborative story.
- Include two terms from the notes (such as orientation & conflict).
- Final product should be a finished product.
- Due Monday
You will be graded on whether and how well you’ve incorporated these terms on narrative structure.
Extra points for exemplifying more than just the two terms in your story.
See the terms explained here and here.
Assignment: Think carefully about a recent conversation. How could you turn that informal conversation into a formal speech? Make one up if you must, but it should be realistic.
- Write down and elaborate on 2 changes or similarities you would have to make to present that conversation as a formal speech with an audience.
Today, we talked about the differences between informal conversation and formal speech. You can find these differences and similarities on pp. 4-6.
Sample assignment:
Pastor Phil’s choir plug.
I recently spoke with Bob about joining the choir. If I were to turn it into a formal speech, I would have to 1) prepare my remarks in advance since my improvised comments would not work in a large group. 2) I would have to think about how a room full of people would read my body language.
- Read: up till p. 89 (you will have time in class Friday to read.)
- Identify: Prepare a selection from the book and be ready to discuss in class.
Nothing will need to be turned in.
Indeed, the best classics often require more mental work to understand. It’s also true that the work is not in vain. Reading such books is a famously rewarding experience.
